Moussay, piano Luc Isenmann, drums Arnault Cuisinier, double-bass Like a classical string quartet or baroque vocal ensemble, a piano, bass and drums jazz trio must be founded on sound human and artistic relations in order to make their music thrive , progress and win public acclaim. Working with drummer Luc Isenmann and double-bass player Arnault Cuisinier, pianist Benjamin Moussay has dedicated himself to creating their common world , to patiently refining the image that emerged from their close cooperation. Based on this valuable common experience, the trio do not turn away from tradition. One could at times detect traces of the classical training Benjamin Moussay acquired under Jean-Louis Haguenauer and Jean Fassina. One could hunt for references to contemporary jazz and jazz history: a bebop piano touch reminiscent of Bud Powell in “Les Mouches”, an allusion to Keith Jarret’s intense lyricism in “Asia”, a soupcon of cantabile hinting at Brad Mehldau in “La Bonde Mysterieuse”, a borrowing from Enrico Pieranunzi’s appoggiaturas in “Balthazar” , an echo of Paul Bley’s poetry in “Souvenir”, an exploration of resonance bringing to mind Duke Ellington’s experiments in “Les Cloches”, and so on. This entirely refreshing record comes at the right time. |

Pandit Ram Narayan , Sarangi Vineet Vias, Tabla Mohommad Torabi, Tampura A two-thousand- year-old Sanskrit text relates that the sounds of the different instruments are arranged according to their place in the universe. The sound of the Sarangi, a bowed string instrument, penetrates the atmosphere. It has three gut strings and 27 metal strings that resonate sympathetically. It is a North Indian instrument that probably originally came from Afghanistan. Its sound is similar to the human voice, and its name is derived from sau rangi, which means “one hundred colors, moods or shades”. The music it produces is very subtle. Ram Narayan has raised the status of the sarangi, an instrument of accompaniment, according to the recent tradition, to that of a solo instrument. |

Rava and Giampaolo Casati, trumpet Gabriele Mirabassi, clarinet Luciano Biondini, accordion Battista Lena, guitar Luca Bulgarelli, bass Marcello Di Leonardo, drums In 1997, Label Bleu discovered with delight the poetical universe of Battista Lena, guitarist and composer, lover of the “Banda Sonora” sound, this type of Italian brass band made up of amateur musicians playing a Fellinian music with a delicate beauty. This Banda is again one of the main features of “I Cosmonauti Russi”, Battista’s last opus. But the project reaches here a new extent. From poems specially written on his request by Marco Lodoli, Battista invites us to a journey in the space of dreams, a trip with a poignant beauty, with no hope to return. On a background played by an incandescent Banda and served by mesmerizing choirs, The Pasolinian star Laura Betti, Gianmaria Testa and Maria Pia de Vito (Italian version) or Arthur H and Rokia Traoré (French version) sing a modern version of lost illusions. Inspired soloists such as Enrico Rava or Gabriele Mirabassi contribute to the launching of the most poetical rocket of the year. |

Comments | “Liz
Lim belongs to a new class of composers whose artistic approach is destined
to undermine centuries-old Eurocentrism once and for all: though adapting
"Western" techniques to a degree, they seek spiritual orientation
in other cultures. It is an organic paradigm shift with totally new artistic
results. Liza Lim, too, is well-acquainted with the key European tradition
and techniques. She studied with Ton de Leeuw in Amsterdam, is familiar with
the scores of a Brian Ferneyhough and attended Summer Courses in Darmstadt,
even going on to teach there. But her sources of inspiration and the roots of
her musical language are largely Asian. This becomes clear from the sonorities of her works.” -Max Nyffeler |

Brandlmayr, drums, percussion Martin Siewert, guitar, lapsteel, electronics Joe Williamson, bass, trackball “Faith in wide time frames and a preference for self-supporting structures allow the musicians to dispense with fixed patterns or forms. In doing so, they create this hybrid music, which defies explanation in the discourse of both the improvisers, even the free ones, and the composers, even those who stick to open formats. This is a matter of an interwoven three-step. The single steps aren't really new, they are, however, applied without compromise, fragmented further, and questioned not matter what. Thus they throw a new light upon the creation of music: the need to employ an aesthetic filter, the development of supporting structures, and the possibilities of storing and repeating.” -Christian Scheib. |

Comments |
Jean Luc Ponty – 5-string electric violin Guy Nsangue Akwa – bass guitar William Lecomte – keyboards Thierry Arpino – drums Moustapha Cisse – percussion |
