·         Recorded last October at the Chapelle Royale du Château de Versailles, these Motets by Michel-Richard de Lalande are a new recording to follow Virgin Classics’ collaboration with the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles. These works are a world premiere on disc.

·         A continuation of the Musique à Versailles full-price series.

·         Michel-Richard de Lalande (b. Paris, 1657; d, Versailles 1726): French composer of the reign of Louis XIV and Louis XV; organist and harpsichordist, and acknowledged as the leading composer of the Late Baroque grand motet. He composed over 70 motets for the royal chapel, which were during the 18th century considered as ‘masters of the genre’ (J.J Rousseau).

·         Under the musical direction of Olivier Schneebeli since 1991, the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles (founded in 1987) has a group of singers, the Pages & Chantres de la Chapelle who are specialised in reviving the lost traditions of the French Musical repertoire of the 17th and 18th centuries, especially that of the French Court. Olivier Schneebeli’s former recording of the Desmarest’s Mass released in 2001 was enthusiastically received by the press and Baroque music-lovers alike.

·         Founded by Jean-Malgoire in 1966, the instrumental ensemble La Grande Ecurie & la Chambre du Roy performs above all the instrumental and vocal works of composers such as Lully, Rameau, Handel, Charpentier, Monteverdi, Mozart

·         To inaugurate a 3-disc contract very recently signed with William Christie, a disc of Handel’s chamber sonatas for violin and continuo. At the harpsichord the American ‘father’ of the Baroque revival, William Christie, accompanies as continuo the first violin to the Arts Florissants, Hiro Furosaki.

·         It is no accident that Les Arts Florissants, founded in 1979 by the harpsichordist and conductor William Christie, have in their first twenty years of existence become one of the best-loved orchestral and vocal ensembles in baroque music. Their concert repertoire is seemingly inexhaustible, including Marc-Antoine Charpentier, Campra, Moulinié, Mondonville, Montéclair and Bouzignac, and they have introduced much forgotten music to the public. William Christie and his ensemble have greatly contributed to the dissemination of French and Ancient musicmusic throughout the world.

·         Many of Handel’s sonatas exist in alternative versions: there was a principle of interchangeability in Handel’s music – in the case of this recording, the sonatas are with violin, accompanied by the harpsichord. Handel’s chamber music is inevitably indebted to the tradition established by Corelli and shows Handel’s ease also in miniature forms and the intimate mood of the chamber sonatas.

·         Fabio Biondi and his ensemble Europa Galante are currently Virgin Classics’ best-selling artists: in this light has been devised a strategic reissue of Vivaldi’s famous concertos to boost even more Fabio Biondi’s sales world-wide and to extend his repute to a wider public.

·         These concertos, each of them being definite block busters, were formerly issued in the complete works they belong to: the albums sold very well everywhere and have rooted Fabio Biondi as one of the best interpreters of Vivaldi’s instrumental works. At many territories’ request the Four Seasons are being reissued on one single disc with a new coupling with other famous concertos such as “La Tempesta di Mare”, from the Concerti con titoli album and other concertos from L’Estro Armonico, another best-selling record.

·         This release is certain to place Fabio Bondi and Europa Galante’s recent version of the Four Seasons as a ‘pillar’ album of the Virgin Classics label.
